Box
Here are my two final box designs -
I really like the second option because I think it shows the development process I have been through - looking at incorporating the essence of space travel into the subscription box I am creating. The circle of space with the abstract fire represents a rocket launching through the box, I think I achieved the aesthetic and theory I was aiming for. This is the design I will carry throughout the rest of the box to make it all look like part of the same project.
Model
These are examples from the Science Museum Group's archive of what could be in the subscription boxes for people to build. I have picked some really interesting things like the module that Tim Peake landed back to earth in and the lunar lander from Apollo 11. I think these will be great for enticing people in and making them see all of the exciting things they could potentially build
. It also illustrates the variety of thing there are.
This is an existing model of the lunar module which Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin used to land on the moon in 1969. This is a great starting point and this will be the example I use to illustrate this project. The whole model will be made out of biodegradable plastic so will be environmentally friendly along with the box.
Info/Instructions
My initial idea is to have the QR code on a flyer leading people to the archive. From there they have to explore the archives to find the building instructions. However, there are 250k+ items so I think it may be too much for people to look through the whole archive, possibly a clue scratch card or treasure hunt might be a better way to go about it.
This is a mock up of the scratch card that has clues to find the building instructions on the archive. I think this is a decent idea, however, it may not encourage people to explore the archives as they could just go straight to the answer. I think I need to consider how I will be encouraging people to explore more parts of the archive.
This is a mockup of the flyer that will be inside the box. It is a treasure hunt designed to encourage people to explore the archive as well as building their model. They will be led to a page and the following answer will be one of the suggested items (see left). The final answer will be the model they are building with the building instructions to download.
One problem I can see with the current archive is the fact that the related objects are the same for all of them so the answer is right there.
A solution for this would be a change to the archive where on each of the necessary pages there is a separate treasure hunt section which lists 4 or 5 different items
On the items there will be a Wonderbox logo, when people click on it they will see the question along with three possible answers. They will then have to explore the possible archive pages to figure out which one is correct. This is a way of using the subscription box to encourage people to explore the archives as they are going.
When you reach the final page of the treasure hunt there is a button to download the lego instructions (see right) and build your model.

Summary
This was a really productive week for me. Just when I thought it wasn't coming together it did! I really simplified for my plan this week and needed to sort it out in my mind before I started designing again. I have definitely learnt the value of planning well - something I have known was a weakness of mine for a while.
I really like my final designs, I think the aesthetic I have gone for really works for this project - it doesn't look childish like I was nervous it would. I think changing the realistic fire for the more abstract colourful fire really works and makes it look more aimed at adults, which it is.
Once I had the aesthetic I needed to sort the process out because it was still a bit muddled in my head. Once I had drawn it out and made my process diagram I think it did all come together into a pretty successful project. I think not only did I create something that did answer the brief, I learned a lot about how to carry out a project of this scale and learned things I will take into following projects - mainly to focus my attention faster and really hone in on what is important to a successful project.
